Quartzite, which is predominantly silica, is a hard non-foliated metamorphic rock. It was originally sandstone. Sandstone is converted into quartzite through heating and pressure related to tectonic compression. It makes a perfect choice for kitchen countertops because chemically it has a very high resistance to anything acidic. It does require sealing.

Soapstone is primarily characterized by a soapy sensation when touched, soapstone has high talc content. The color of soapstone ranges greatly depending upon the type of soapstone used.
